Free or not Free Range Pig Farming

January 24, 2012

I learned today on Pat Kenny (RTE 1) that the term free-range as it applies to pig farming is not legally defined in Ireland, which effectively means that anyone can sell intensively farmed pork in Ireland and stick a free-range label on it. This is nuts.

If like me you think we should support those farmers who offer a better life to farmed pigs please send an email to the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney at simon.coveney@oir.ie

Here is the text that i sent to him feel free to copy and paste.

‘Dear Mr Coveney
I was shocked to hear that the term free-range pork is not regulated in Ireland. I can’t believe that we’re allowing people to sell mis-described goods to Irish consumers.

I would love to support farmers who improve the quality of life for their animals by going free-range and would welcome the introduction of a regulatory system for this sector.

All the best
Elaine Butler’
