Indoor Games to Play with Toddler

January 17, 2012

I’m always trying to come up with ways to pull the kids away from the TV, here are some of my favourites.

Rainbow Foam

  • The rainbow foam shown above is the brainchild of a former teacher, Asia, in America. Check out her blog or book for loads more cool ideas.
  • Skittles with kitchen roll inserts and balled-up socks
  • Playdough
  • Painting
  • Colouring
  • Bubbles – You can get bubble wands with bent handles that work with plates insteads of bottles. These are much easier for young children to use.
  • Musical Statues
  • Singing
  • Making Music. Here’s a page on easy to make musical instruments
  • Baking (we like cookies best)
  • Hide and Seek
  • Find the hidden toy
  • Lights on / Lights off – Lay out a collection of toys or whatever. Ask kids to memorise collection. Turn off light and take one item away. Get kids to guess which item was removed.
  • Animal Sherades (you guess what animal the kids are pretending to be)
  • Pin the tail on the donkey.
  • Dress-up
  • Jigsaws. You can make your own for even more fun.
  • Flash Cards. Also something you can make yourself.
  • Make paper-chain decorations
  • Make party hats or crowns.
  • Ink stamps
  • Make Stone Dominos
  • Printing with potatoes
  • Have an indoor picnic
  • Read a book.
  • Act out a book.
  • Put on a puppet show
  • Play shop / restaurant
  • Make birthday cards
  • Build a blanket fort
  • Turn off the lights and use torches.
  • Indoor hopscotch. (click on image below to go to site with instructions)
